5 Tips to Maintain a Good Looking Cowboy Hat
Published on Saturday, 27 February 2010

Cowboy hats truly made a long way since they were first created for the sole purpose of outdoor chores. They were mainly used for protection against the piercing heat of the sun. The term cowboy was coined from its popularity among the cowboys who used them for social gatherings and events. Later on, cowboy hats served as a universal image for the sporty native hero of America until they made their way to the fashion scene.
As a tribute to modern fashion, a lot of hat shops and designers offer traditional cowboy hats in different styles, colors and materials. Even though it developed different looks, modern cowboy hats maintained their quality enough to withstand rain, snow and Western heat.
Cowboy hats whether made from straw, felt or leather needs proper caring too. Joella Torres, a hat shop proprietor and a hat expert, shares her knowledge in the proper maintenance of cowboy hats.
You can take these practical tips from Torres to keep your cowboy hat in its best appearance.
1.    Allow hats to dry naturally. Cowboy hats can take on snow and rain. But before storing your hat, you have to make sure it is dry. Never expose it to heat as it can be fatal to your hat. A dry and clean corner is enough to air-dry your hat.
2.    If your hat is made of felt or fur, do not rub or wipe off drips from the hat. Wiping thick substances like mud may cause it to seep into that hat's material. A good trick is to let the substance dry off until you can scrape it off your hat.
3.    To keep the luster of your hat, it is important to do regular brushing especially with hats made of shag.
4.    Do not wash hats made of shag, felt and fur. It may cause hair to fall off and may permanently damage your hat.
5.    Keep hats in individual plastic bags with twist tie locks. Their original boxes can't protect them from insects.
With these simple tips, you can assure that your expensive cowboy hat will look good for a long time.
